FA Cup final Chelsea hold, but Ake’s late goal advances Man City to the fifth round Following the match, Pep Guardiola, the coach of Manchester City, expressed his sadness for Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, who had announced his departure from the team, but also his improved ability to sleep when City plays Liverpool.
FA Cup holders Manchester City left it late to book their place in the fifth round with Nathan Ake’s scrappy 88th-minute effort clinching a 1-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Friday.
After moving into their new stadium in 2019, City had never defeated Tottenham or even scored a goal there. However, Ake scored from close range when home goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario mishandled a corner from Kevin De Bruyne, causing the ball to fall loose.
Tottenham may have few genuine grievances considering that they were consistently subpar against Pep Guardiola’s team and seldom made Stefan Ortega make a significant save.
Eight-time FA Cup winners Chelsea were held to a scoreless draw at home by Aston Villa three days after making it to the League Cup final, and second-tier Bristol City and Premier League Nottingham Forest also finished scoreless at Ashton Gate.
There were goals at Sheffield Wednesday although no winner as they drew 1-1 with Coventry City.
Breaking the stadium duck:
Manchester City’s record at Tottenham has been something of an anomaly considering their success everywhere else.
They had lost their previous four Premier League games there without scoring, and in the 2019 Champions League semi-final, they had lost 1-0.
By the time the most recent match entered its final minutes, 101 attempts at goal had gone unrewarded for City in Tottenham’s opulent new arena, which had welcomed 9,000 City supporters. This was thanks to the efforts of Bernardo Silva and De Bruyne.
However, Ake pounced as Vicario faltered and was unable to retain the ball in a busy area.
Oscar Bobb had an early shot disallowed for offside as City dominated the first half, forcing the typically attack-minded Tottenham to resort to frantic defending.
Up until De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku were introduced by City with 25 minutes left, the second half was more evenly matched. Vicario denied Silva, then Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg made a mistake, allowing De Bruyne to shoot inches wide.
With only one chance on goal, the hosts were not even encouraged by James Maddison coming off the bench for his first game since suffering an ankle injury in November.
This was the first competitive game in which Tottenham had failed to score since manager Ange Postecoglou came over.
“We gave up so late in the game after working so hard to stay in it. Postecoglou gave in, “But they were the superior team. “They can cause suffering, therefore we had to put in a lot of effort and for the most part we defended well.”
Chelsea held:
Chelsea had won eight successive FA Cup ties at Stamford Bridge but could find no way past Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez as the visitors held out for a replay at Villa Park.
